PANAJI: Last year, 11 persons in Goa died due to rabies — the highest in the state in the last five years. Replying to an unstarred question by Mapusa MLA Francis D'Souza, health minister Vishwajit Rane said rabies has claimed two lives in the first five months of this year, adding that 108 cases of rabies had been reported till May 2009.

Rabies, a zoonotic disease (transmitted to humans from animals) is caused by a virus. It infects domestic as well as wild animals, and is spread to people through close contact with saliva (via bites or scratches) of an infected dog, cat etc. In 2008, 192 cases of rabies were recorded. In 2007, the figure stood at 223, with 2 deaths registered
